GEORGETOWN: The seven MPs who left their parties recently may set up an "Independent Caucus" and use it as a platform to continue with their political struggles and service to the people.
Bayan Baru MP Datuk Seri Mohd Zahrain Hashim said the caucus would comprise like-minded representatives with shared concerns.
"I will meet up with the six other MPs as soon as Dewan Rakyat convenes on Monday (tomorrow) to moot the idea of the caucus," he said after a lecture on
The Future of the Malays at Bangunan Tabung Haji in Bayan Lepas yesterday.
The six MPs are Tan Tee Beng (Nibong Tebal), Mohsin Fadzli Samsuri (Bagan Serai), Zulkifli Noordin (Kulim-Bandar Baharu), Datuk Ibrahim Ali (Pasir Mas), Datuk Dr Chua Soon Bui (Tawau) and Eric Majimbun (Sepanggar).
He added that as independents, the MPs would have the freedom to support sound policies that would benefit the people.
"We will not be obliged to support policies which we feel will not benefit the people as we are no longer aligned to our former political parties."
Zahrain said the setting up of the caucus would also provide an alternative to the people so they would be able to decide if they preferred a two-party system or an open system.
"The caucus will serve as an alternative or a third force," he added.
Asked on how he felt about attending the parliament session as an independent after two years as PKR MP, Zahrain said he was ready and was compiling issues to raise during his speech.
The lecture was earlier interrupted when Bayan Baru PKR Youth chief Ahmad Azrizal Tahir walked in to hand Zahrain a memorandum containing 25,000 to 30,000 signatures of constituents in Bayan Baru seeking Zahrain's resignation as MP.
Ahmad Azrizal said the constituents felt cheated by Zahrain who had contested on a PKR ticket.
At another function, Zahrain quashed talk that he was biding his time before rejoining Umno.
The former Tanjung Umno division chief said he would stand by his decision to remain as an independent despite receiving invitations from Umno leaders to rejoin the party.

"Ramai yang merasa tertipu dengan tindakan Zahrain keluar parti, jadi kita terpaksa menghantar mesej ini kepadanya," kata Sim yang juga timbalan ketua Angkatan Muda PKR Pulau Pinang.
"Saya diberitahu yang Zahrain terperanjat dan pucat sewaktu menerima petisyen tersebut, tetapi beliau tetap menerimanya, " katanya.
